More & more
people are enjoying recreation on their public lands.
Yet more & more public lands are closed to many forms of recreation
through Wilderness, Wilderness Study Areas, Scenic Rivers, National
Monuments etc, it is clear another form of designation is needed to
preserve access for every form of recreation.
Semi-Primitive BackCountry Recreation Designation.
Over 52% (101,000,000 acres) of our National Forest lands are
already Designated Wilderness
Wilderness advocates have proposed closing more lands through
additional Wilderness designations.
Yet as little as 2% of the people who visit National Forests
recreate in Wilderness.
Only the hardy few, who have the time & ability to hike or horseback
long distances can enjoy this huge area of public land.
Over 23,000 people have signed a petition opposing any further
Wilderness designation in California or mountain biker
Senator Morrow,
Congressman Pombo
& others have drafted letters opposing inappropriate Wilderness.
Millions of dollars are being spent to create a designated road &
trail system on our National Forests.
The Semi-Primitive Backcountry Recreation Designation would ensure
this money was well spent by protecting existing roads & trails from
future closure via Wilderness or other restrictive designations
Backcountry Recreation Designation would
Preserve access to all existing trails for future generations of
fisherman, hunters, hikers, horseback riders, trail bikers, cattle
grazing, mountain bikers, 4x4, campers & more.
Encourage volunteerism by assuring trails they work on would not be
closed to them
Allow Forest Service to make long term plans without being
undermined by Wilderness designations contrary to Forest management
Allow more cost effective maintenance of trails using motorized
crews & volunteers
Promote the net best public benefit by spending money on trails that
can be enjoyed by everyone, instead of a very few
Allow fire crews to fight unnatural wildfires & preserve their
access roads
Incomparable views from motorized access trails would be protected
for future generations by Semi-Primitive BackCountry Recreation
Designation
Motorized volunteers have donated thousands of hours of labor to
maintain trails within areas now proposed for Wilderness.
Preserving access will ensure continued recreation opportunities
upon which many local rural economies depend.
Semi-Primitive BackCountry Recreation Designation preserves
livestock grazing, Wildlife Management, Resource Conservation,
Renewable Resource Harvesting & Private Property Rights
Semi-Primitive BackCountry Recreation Designation is good for the
environment, good for the economy & good for the public.
